ABOUT THE SERIES

The volume described here is a first edition of this set of uncoloured engraved plates in the Preston Blake Collection held by Westminster Libraries and Archives.

The series consists of 21 plates. The publication line on each plate has a date of 1825, with the exception of one plate which has 1828 (in error?). The label on the cover of the volume has a date of 1826. Blake died in 1827, the publication was not a success.

Each plate is printed on a larger sheet paper of the order of 385 x 275mm, see below.

Each plate is similar in size, with a printed area within the range 198-203mm x 149-152mm, except the title plate which is 185 x 150mm. Each plate consists of a strong carefully engraved central image.

The central image is surrounded by a more crudely drawn illustrated frame with relevant text from the Book of Job.

The label on the front of the volume gives the price as £3 3s. and £6 6s. for "proofs". At the bottom right of some of these plates the almost deleted word Proof can be seen. (Was it usual to mark the plate itself at the proof stage?) These plates are probably a first edition.
