"Images of London" is a database of Prints, Maps and Panoramas of London and the Thames pre-1870. The database uses the facilities of the Motco Image Database developed by Motco Enterprises Limited. "Images of London" is in the process of being built and the examples included here include about 1200 prints published in 13 series (see the
list below) and four maps and three panoramas (see the index to the left).
Typically the print series were produced in parts, say monthly, following an announcement by the publisher and by payment of a subscription. Each month the next part would be delivered in a wrapper, in some cases with text. To complete the series there might be a title plate, an index, instructions to the book binder and a list of the subscribers to the series. The publisher would also sell complete bound sets after issue of the series.

The database will be searchable by the names of artists, engravers, publishers, place names,
dates and subject.
The search function will be accessible at this site later this year when the database has
larger content. The presentations of the current series, accessible from the
list below, are produced when requested by a pre-programmed search of the database.

There are three sizes of images in the database for each print. The example above is the small image.
It is 4.2 inches (10.67cm) wide (landscape), or high (portrait), at 72 dots per inch on the
screen, which is the standard screen resolution.
The main image is 8.5 inches (21.59cm) wide (landscape), or high (portrait)
at 72 dots per inch and the large
image has a largest dimension of approximately 18 inches (45.72cm) at 72 dots per inch. The image
files are
compressed JPEG files with sizes of the order of 15k, 70K and 200k for the small,
main and
large images. In order to maximise the display of the picture in the image any text legend and
framing is
cropped. In some cases there is a fourth file for each print with an image of the legend, etc. for reference.
HOW TO ACCESS THE MAPS
Whilst many pictorial images, such as the one below of View in Westminster Abbey from the
Altar from Wood's Views in London, Westminster
and their Vicinities (1838), can be successfully previewed with
relatively small scale images giving a reasonable representation of the content, this
is not possible with larger, more detailed items, such as maps and panoramas.
These can only be satisfactorily displayed by accepting that larger files and images are required,
and that inevitably these take time to download.

Individual maps may be selected from the list below. Each map may then be accessed from a summary overview of the map superimposed with a standard half mile square grid. By clicking on a square of the grid a larger scale version of that segment of the map can be accessed. These segments cover a larger area than the half mile grid squares so that there is overlap for viewing of areas which otherwise would fall on the boundaries between the squares. The structure of the grid is shown below (you cannot click on this one). The squares are 1/2 mile x 1/2 mile. The centre square is based on the North West corner of the Tower of London. The squares in the grid are numbered North, South and East, West of the centre square. For example: the bottom righthand square contains a dock; this square is E4-S2, i.e. four squares to the East and two squares to the South of the Tower of London.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF MAPS
Please note that a new improved facility is being developed for this comparison function, refer to the Motco Home Page.
The digital images were
photographed by Motco from orginals in the Motco and other collections.
Some CD's will be produced of Print Series and Maps. Each CD will include a connection to this website, where the most recent version of each CD will be listed together with any additional information relevant to the CD which has been added to the Database since the CD was issued.
