ABOUT THE PANORAMA

A hand-coloured wood-engraved panorama, eighteen feet in length, published by Charles Evans, 6 Wellington Street, Strand and I. Whitelaw, 188 Fleet Street in 1849 (see below for the title plate). The view extends from Westminster downstream to Greenwich Reach, across the river and up the south bank to Deptford. This is an extended version of the original twelve foot version published in 1845, see notes by Ralph Hyde.

In addition to the changes noted by Ralph Hyde, comparison of the two versions from the images in the Motco database shows the following:

The panorama has lost its original border and the line round the image itself with about a quarter inch of the sky. Some of the text references in the lower margin have been lost - Sir Robert Inglis's, Mr Allinson's - M.P., St. Bride's, St. Antholin's and Custom House. The text is also in some cases differently aligned with the image. This suggests that the text captions may have been on separately printed blocks, some of which have been lost, and the edge of the blocks of the image itself worn.

The image below is of the title plate on the reverse of the front cover. Click on the image to obtain a larger version, and click again for an even larger one for complete legibility.

HOW TO ACCESS THE PANORAMA

There are two ways of accessing the panorama. There are two complete images of the whole panorama, a small one and a larger one. Since the files sizes are large, we suggest you start with the small one. If you click on a section of the image, a new window will be opened displaying a larger version of that section, with an even larger version also available. When you close that window, you will still be at the original position on the image of the whole panorama.

There are place names in the lower margin of the panorama. There is a list of these names, in the order that they appear on the Panorama, starting from Westmister. Clicking on a name will display the relevant section of the panorama.
