ABOUT THE PANORAMA

A wood-engraved panorama, twelve feet in length, from Westminster to St. Katharine's Docks, published by Charles Evans, 352 Strand, a product of the rivalry for subscribers between the Illustrated London News and the Pictorial Times and in support of the latter. Originally a gift for subscribers, this uncoloured version was sold in 1845 for one shilling and sixpence, see notes by Ralph Hyde.

The image below is of the title plate on the reverse of the front cover. Click on the image to obtain a larger version, and click again for an even larger one for complete legibility.

The panorama extends from Westminster to St. Katharine's Docks, and is particularly interesting for the river craft illustrated. There is a later version of the panorama extending downstream and across the river to Greenwich.

HOW TO ACCESS THE PANORAMA

There are two ways of accessing the panorama. There are two complete images of the whole panorama, a small one and a larger one. Since the files sizes are large, we suggest you start with the small one. If you click on a section of the image, a new window will be opened displaying a larger version of that section, with an even larger version also available. When you close that window, you will still be at the original position on the image of the whole panorama.

There are place names in the lower margin of the panorama. There is a list of these names, in the order that they appear on the Panorama, starting from Westmister. Clicking on a name will display the relevant section of the panorama.
