___________________________
ABOUT THE SERIES William Frederick Rock was Britain's most prolific printmaker - ever. Between 1840 and 1881 he produced over 7000 topographical prints. In addition he produced playing cards, 'conversation cards', comical faces, valentine cards, views down telescopes, satires on bloomers and crinolines, miniature music scores, paper panoramas, illustrated maps, and much else besides. This year, 2002, being the bicentenary of his birth, we are celebrating the occasion by adding to the site all the topographical prints by Rock that we can find. So far we have tracked down almost 5000. They represent towns and villages throughout England and Wales. Many are of seaside resorts and watering places. Others are of towns less likely to have attracted holidaymakers. Large industrial towns such as Birmingham, Manchester, and Sheffield were not neglected. Many of Rock's images are unique in the information they carry. Initially these little vignetted views served as headings on illustrated letter-paper. Recipients of the letters frequently snipped them out and stuck them in their scrapbooks. When Rock had enough prints of any particular popular location he would reissue them in view-books and on panoramas.
