PAPWORTH'S "SELECT VIEWS OF LONDON" (1816)

76 hand-colored aquatint and line-engravings, published by Rudolph Ackermann in 1816. The collection was compiled by John Papworth, an architect. Bernard Adams in London Illustrated 1604-1851 refers to the series as Papworth's. However Adams also reports that the spine was labelled as Ackermann's Select Views of London. The title plate in the (City of Westminster Library) volume, from which the images in this database were taken, ommits mention of Papworth. With the exception of plate No. 51, Guildhall all the plates were published earlier, between 1809 and 1815, in the Repository of Arts. In most cases the earlier plate and volume numbers have been burnished out.

This series of prints is Series 117 as catalogued in London Illustrated 1604-1851. The image below is one of the five larger images, of The Staircase at Carlton House, originally published 1st January 1812.

See below for a complete list and access to images of all of the plates.
