Indexing The index uses modern spelling of place names, which may vary from the version in the original print or accompanying text, the latter also may not be consistent. The locations are identified by the name and the county or other geographic division within which they lie. This is particularly important where there is multiple use of a place name. Unfortunately the county and other boundaries are subject to modification, and do not provide the permenance required. This has yet to be resolved. The version of geographic division used is that in use in 1995, with the exception of Avon being renamed Bristol.
