ABOUT THE SERIES

One of the earliest pocket book atlases (190 x 130mm). J. Cary's 50 page map was first published in 1786. It is item No. 183 as catalogued by James Howgego in Printed Maps of London c1553-1850.

The images are from the 1786 (first) edition. In addition to the 50 plates of the map, the atlas includes a title plate, an explanatory page on how to use the map, an overview map of the 50 numbered pages and an alphabetic index of nearly 2000 place names. The location index to the left is a transcription of this index

TO ACCESS THE MAP

Note: The file sizes required for high quality screen presentation of maps and detailed prospects and panoramas are large and may take over a minute to download.

The map may be accessed in two ways:

There is an overview of the complete map. By clicking on a point on this overview map you will access an image of the page containing that location. The images will take time to arrive as they are sufficiently large for all detail and text to be legible on screen. You can move the image either using the scroll bars, or click on the image and then use the Page Up/Down and Home keys or the Up/Down and Left/Right Arrows.

When you have a page of the map on display you can move to the next adjacent pages in all four directions (assuming there is a further page in that direction) from the links to the top left of the map display, below the title.

Alternatively there is a complete index transcribed from the original index. (The current version has the original spellings.) The index appears in the lefthand column. It will take a minute to arrive as it contains nearly 2000 entries. You can scroll down the index with the scroll bar, or click on the index and then use the Page Up/Down and Home keys or the Up/Down Arrows.
