1. Introduction and About the Map click
ABOUT THE MAP John Rocque's 26 inches to the mile 24 page map was first published in 1746. It is item No. 96 as catalogued by James Howgego in Printed Maps of London c1553-1850. The map consists of twenty four sheets, in three rows of eight. They are referenced A-H horizontally and 1-3 vertically, eg. Sheet C2 is the third sheet from the lefthand side, second row from the top. For the purpose of indexing and screen display each sheet is divided into nine segments, three horizontally and three vertically. This is the same segmentation as used by Rocque for his original index. There are 216 (24 x 9) segments for the whole map, ie. segments 1-24 for the first row, 25-48 for the second, etc. There are three decorated cartouches on the lower edge of the map, for the scale, title and dedication. The images are from the 1746 (first) edition. The survey was carried out by John Rocque between 1737 and 1746, the map was engraved by John Pine and first published October 1746 by John Pine at the Golden Head against Burlington House Piccadilly and John Tinney at the Golden Lion Fleet Street.
TO ACCESS THE MAP
Note: The file sizes required for high quality screen presentation of maps and detailed
prospects and panoramas are large and may take over a minute to download. When you have a segment of the map on display you can move to the next adjacent segment in all four directions (assuming there is a further segment in that direction) by clicking on the North, South, East and West links to the top left of the display of the map segment. The pages of the map do not overlap and a segment at the edge of a page will not overlap with the adjacent segment on the next page, however within a page there is some overlap between the segments. Alternatively there is an index of 1500 names. Clicking on a name in the index will access the segment of the map containing that location. You can then move to adjacent segments as above. This index includes all the major streets and comprises those names on the map written in capitals, with the original spellings as they appear on the map. The index is displayed in the lefthand column. It will take a minute to arrive as it contains nearly 1500 entries. You can scroll down the index with the scroll bar, or click on the index and then use the Page Up/Down and Home keys or the Up/Down Arrows.
