ABOUT THE MAP

John Fairburn's 3 3/4 inches to the mile map was first published in 1795. It is item No. 203 (6) as catalogued by James Howgego in Printed Maps of London c1553-1850.

The images are from the 1802 (seventh) edition. The cartouche (illustrated map title) sits rather awkwardly two thirds of the way across the top. This is because the map originally ended with a border at the righthand edge of the cartouche. In 1801 an additional sheet about 7 inches wide was added at the righthand side, obscuring the original margin, to extend the map to show the Isle of Dogs with the West India Docks under construction and Perry's Dock.

The title of the 1802 issue was amended to read SEVENTH EDITION, exhibiting the various Alterations and Improvements now making or intended to be made by the CITY of LONDON at Snow Hill, Temple Bar, the Bank and Tottenham Court Road; also those of the London and West India DOCK COMPANIES &c. With reference to the latter the London Docks, West India Docks and the intended Commercial Road are shown.

In the London Docks (to the East of the Tower of London) the previously engraved roads and other features demolished to make way for the dock development can be seen under the blue colouring.

TO ACCESS THE MAP

Note: The file sizes required for high quality screen presentation of maps and detailed prospects and panoramas are large and may take over a minute to download.

For the purpose of indexing and screen display the map is divided into 81 segments, 9 horizontally and 9 vertically. The current segmentation is to keep the size of the files for the segments containing a lot of detail to less than 500k.

The map may be accessed in three ways:

Overview Map and Grid

There is an overview of the complete map. By clicking on a point on this overview map you will access an image of the segment containing that location. The images will take time to arrive as they are large in order for detail and text to be legible on screen. You can move the image either using the scroll bars, or click on the image and then use the Page Up/Down and Home keys or the Up/Down and Left/Right Arrows.

When you have a segment of the map on display you can move to the next adjacent segment in all four directions (assuming there is a further segment in that direction) by clicking on the North, South, East and West links to the top left of the display of the map segment. The pages of the map do not overlap and a segment at the edge of a page will not overlap with the adjacent segment on the next page, however within a page there is some overlap between the segments.

Index of Names

There is an index of names. Clicking on a name in the index will access the segment of the map containing that location. You can then move to adjacent segments as above. This index includes all the named streets and other locations with the original spellings as they appear on the map. The index is displayed in the lefthand column. It will take a minute to arrive as it contains nearly 2000 entries. You can scroll down the index with the scroll bar, or click on the index and then use the Page Up/Down and Home keys or the Up/Down Arrows.

Unsegmented Maps

In addition, because the segments are relatively small in geographic area the following can be accessed as complete maps.

Greenwich (100k file)
London Dock (100k file)
Strand and Fleet Street (100k file)
Tower of London (100k file)
West India Dock (150k file)
Whitehall and Westminster (400k file)
