THOMAS SHOTTER BOYS - LONDON AS IT IS (1842)

A set of 26 handcoloured lithographs (plus one additional one not usually in the set. This was one of the last important series to be handcoloured before colour printing processes took over.

The image below is The Tower and Mint, from Great Tower Hill. The tail-coated artist in the foreground is Shotter Boys himself..

The series was drawn as a monochrome publication. There were a small number of original handcoloured sets, said to have been coloured by Boys. The series is best known from facsimiles of these coloured versions.

The lithograph was printed in two stages, the first stone with the line drawing and the second with the areas of tone.

See below for a complete list and access to images of all of the plates.

This series of prints is Series 196 as catalogued in London Illustrated 1604-1851 by Bernard Adams.

ABOUT THOMAS SHOTTER BOYS

Notes by Ralph Hyde will be added.

There is also background on Thomas Shotter Boys in Bernard Adams's text from London Illustrated 1604-1851.
